Innovations are, hardly on the market, already outdated again, one supposed innovation chases the next. It can happen that we no longer keep up, and the new &#8220;VUCA&#8221; world is also a great challenge for companies. VUCA describes a society that is characterized by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Volatility: The market environment changes frequently and fundamentally.<\/li>\n<li>Uncertainty: Future market developments cannot be predicted.<\/li>\n<li>Complexity: The environment consists of many elements that are unknown.<\/li>\n<li>Ambiguity: Information can be interpreted in different ways.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So nothing is fixed and rapid change is the only constant. But how do I deal with this as a company? Product development responds to the VUCA world with new, flexible approaches, such as agility.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Agile product development<\/h2>\n<p>Agile methods have a common denominator: iteration, that is, optimizing an application through repetition. In this process, the system architecture often emerges only in the process. Usually, several ideas are tried out simultaneously until the best approach prevails. The project team remains flexible and can react quickly to changing requirements, wishes and priorities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Design Thinking<\/h2>\n<p>An agile method that is frequently used in IoT is &#8220;design thinking&#8221;. This creativity approach is based on understanding customer needs, rapidly generating many creative ideas, and rapid prototyping. In IoT, it is used to develop innovative products and services in the shortest possible time. Ideally, design thinking incorporates as many different experiences, opinions and perspectives as possible in an interdisciplinary team. The approach assumes that innovation is an intersection of desirability, feasibility and viability. Only if all three factors are taken into account can innovation emerge that can also succeed in the market.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-85942 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tele-online.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/TELE-Deign-Thinking-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Design Thinking\" width=\"2048\" height=\"956\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tele-online.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/TELE-Deign-Thinking-scaled.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.tele-online.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/TELE-Deign-Thinking-768x358.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tele-online.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/TELE-Deign-Thinking-1536x717.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.tele-online.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/TELE-Deign-Thinking-1920x896.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.tele-online.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/TELE-Deign-Thinking-320x149.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>The Design Thinking process: structure and organization<\/h3>\n<p>Design Thinking consists of several phases, which do not necessarily have to follow one another in a linear fashion. It is entirely desirable for the team to sometimes jump forward or backward in the process. For example, developers sometimes design simple prototypes right out of the gate to better understand the problem.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>The right team<\/h3>\n<p>Design thinking thus ideally brings together people from different disciplines, departments and hierarchical levels in one team. So the team has broad knowledge and greater solution expertise due to different perspectives.<\/p>\n<p>The following phases comprise a classic Design Thinking process:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Understand<\/h3>\n<p>In this phase, it is important that the entire team understands the task and the problem area.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Observe<\/h3>\n<p>Now the target group moves into the center. What are their needs and what do they require? The project team now goes directly to the potential customer and enters into an open dialog. In this way, the developers understand real problem situations and find suitable solutions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Point-of-view<\/h3>\n<p>In this phase, the various insights gained should become a common whole. Team members share their experiences and establish a common understanding through questions\/answers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Ideate<\/h3>\n<p>Now the generation of ideas takes place. Any creativity technique such as brainstorming is allowed. The goal is to produce as many ideas as possible without judging. Subsequently, the idea proposals are summarized and structured.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Prototype<\/h3>\n<p>In design thinking, speed is of the essence. Therefore, the team tries out the selected ideas as quickly as possible using prototypes or a Minimal Viable Product (MVP).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Test<\/h3>\n<p>In the test phase, the project team creates the so-called proof of concept (PoC). A proof of concept is the result of a feasibility study. It is therefore an important milestone in a project and serves as a decision-making basis for the further course of the project. With a PoC, you can go to potential customers and perform initial tests in a real environment. In this way, the customer gets to know the product while it is still in development, and the development team quickly obtains data that can then be used as a basis for further development. On the one hand, technical problems can be identified and solutions found. On the other hand, it quickly becomes clear whether the product design is user-friendly and accepted by the user. Under certain circumstances, a prototype and thus an idea may ultimately be discarded.<\/p>\n<p>One example from the TELE-Haase environment is the development of a wireless gate control system in underground garages using IoT. For this system, tests were carried out at the customer&#8217;s site to determine which wireless connections actually work in underground garages and where the control system can be installed for convenient maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>In the PoC phase, communication with the customer is particularly important. He must understand that it is not yet a finished product, but a prototype for testing purposes.
