Innovative technology from Austria to combat climate change<\/h2>\n

Two Upper Austrians develop a floating, saltwater-resistant photovoltaic system that can withstand waves up to three meters high and supply island states around the globe with electricity – and TELE invests in this groundbreaking technology.<\/p>\n

The story of SolOcean begins with a dream. Founder Gerold Guger had a key experience while on vacation in the Maldives in 2012: on his vacation island, he saw a tanker refueling the generators with diesel. What remained was an ugly film of oil on the turquoise surface of the sea – an impressive image that never left him. Shortly thereafter, he discovered that the entire energy supply of hundreds of Maldive islands is dependent on diesel generators – a technology that is increasingly polluting the dream islands and fueling climate change. It was a situation which Guger did not want to simply accept. “The islands consume 512 million tons of diesel in a year, which is equivalent to 1.4 million tons of CO2. I couldn’t get this picture out of my head, climate change can’t go on like this, I just had to do something,” explains the Upper Austrian visionary.<\/p>\n

Technology for a better world<\/h3>\n

Guger began researching and came across the idea of floating photovoltaics, which was in general still very immature at the time. So, without further ado, the entrepreneur founded Guger Forschungs GesmbH and sought out scientific partners at the Technical University of Graz (TU Graz) and other research institutes to assist him in the development of his “floater”: a floating, saltwater-resistant photovoltaic module. “We wanted to create a system that would get us away from fossil fuels and towards clean energy production, one which would work both on land and at sea,” Guger says. The idea quickly took shape and piqued the curiosity of Martin Aichinger, a veteran of the Austrian photovoltaic scene. The thoroughbred technician joined the team and gave product development just the right boost within a very short time. Efficient energy generation even in rough seas<\/h3>\n

SolOcean’s Floater is a floating, modular photovoltaic system that can be used in fresh and salt water as well as on land. The two-square-meter photovoltaic (PV) modules are mounted on high-buoyancy floats and can be flexibly connected, combined into larger areas. They are resistant to long-term salt corrosion, move with currents of up to 2m\/s, and function flawlessly in waters with up to three-meter waves. The high-efficiency glass-glass-PV modules in halfcut-technology have guaranteed diffusion tightness due to a double butyl edge seal and deliver above-average area performance on shadeless water surfaces. They are hydrophobic and photocatalytically coated to prevent salt crystals or bird droppings from sticking to its surface. With a combination of a slightly curved PV double glass module (4.4mm) and the high performance HDPE float, the system has high inherent rigidity. It is abrasion resistant and does not generate environmentally harmful microplastics. Quality made in Austria<\/h3>\n

“It is important to us that the transport routes for the production of the floater are as short as possible and that the added value happens locally. That’s why the main components all come from Austria,” Guger makes his claim clear. This approach also ensures highest quality making the system reliable and maintenance-free – after all, the floater is designed to run for at least 25 years. The PV modules come from Energetica Industries in Carinthia, while Rehau Guntramsdorf supplies the floats, which are made of HDPE using a process developed in-house. For simulation calculations of the high-performance floats, the renowned TU Graz has been won as a partner.<\/p>\n

Investing in promising technology<\/h3>\n

So the original dream has turned into a tangible, highly innovative product that will permanently change the way energy is generated. Now, SolOcean is taking the next big step. The first floater system has been produced and is currently being installed for test operation on a water surface in Lower Austria. Further installations will follow later this year and will provide important test results for fine-tuning.<\/p>\n

At the end of 2020, the Viennese industrial company TELE Haase took a financial stake in SolOcean. In addition to development know-how and a global sales network, TELE is also contributing measurement technology from its own company, which will support the SolOcean team in monitoring water depth, temperature, wave height and feed into the power grid.<\/p>\n

At the same time, a crowd-investing campaign is currently underway, with which SolOcean is collecting fresh money for the further development and brining the floater to international markets. Via this crowd-funding, small investors with a few hundred Euros are also highly welcome to invest in the floating photovoltaic system and thus make their contribution. “With our revolutionary technology, we could have a positive impact on climate change very soon.
