“What will the division of labour between humans and robots in assembly look like in the future?” TELE provided practical input to the Institute of Management Sciences, Human Centered Cyber Physical Production and Assembly Systems at TU Vienna (Technical University Vienna) on this question. A team of students uses technical laboratories, production and the know-how of TELE employees for their research.<\/p>\n

Work in production affects more than 440,000 jobs in the material goods industry in Austria and currently accounts for almost a quarter of the gross domestic product. Robotics is rapidly becoming an important part of production, and humans and robots will work more closely together in the future. In order for human-robot cooperation to become more dynamic and adaptive, scientific research is needed. The goal of the field study is therefore a standardised, human-centered division of labour between humans and robots.<\/p>\n

Ways out of monotony<\/h3>\n

Mostly, tasks are allocated once between robots and humans and are firmly scheduled. This brings disadvantages, such as monotony for the workers and thus gradually reduces attention. Therefore, the field study explores scenarios in which the human has more freedom to decide on how to design the workflow. As a result, the employee can choose a suitable division of labor from among several possible variants. Researchers call this approach “adaptive” or “dynamic” division of labour.<\/p>\n

At TELE, students investigate topics such as “preferences for delegating tasks in a multi-agent team”,” simultaneous mental and physical tasks,” and “division of labour between humans and robots in assembly.” In the process, participants have the opportunity to see the latest robotics technology and to experience it for themselves.<\/p>\n

What is a meaningful task?<\/h3>\n

The result of the field study is, among other things, a specific model for task classification with regard to the allocation of duties between humans and robots. Here, not only economic efficiency but also preferences of the workers are taken into account. An important result is also the definition of what constitutes a holistic (holistic) task for a human. Work in production should make more sense for each individual in the future, which in turn increases job satisfaction.
