Energy Self-Sufficiency 2025<\/h2>\n

TELE is taking the next step on the road to a climate-friendly and sustainable future by launching the “Energy Self-Sufficiency 2025” program as part of its sustainability focus. The strategy not only includes the development of sustainable products, but also enables the entire company to transform towards greater energy self-sufficiency.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

Creating awareness and establishing cooperations<\/h3>\n

In the first step, TELE will create awareness for the topic inside and outside the organisation and use its network to establish cooperations with suitable partners. At the same time, TELE will renew itself from within and develop all internal processes towards “energy self-sufficiency”. This applies, for example, to the building’s energy supply, which already uses solar energy in part and be developed to become even more environmentally friendly in the future. But the focus is also on energy-intensive processes, such as production at the Vienna site. In the future, each area will be evaluated and redesigned with a view to social\/economic compatibility, circular economy and new technologies – in line with the TELE guiding formula ” Innovation + Sustainability = Profitability”. Marketable products and services for greater energy self-sufficiency can then emerge from these experiences within the company and through extensive collaborations with research institutions, makers and startups.<\/p>\n

Three levels of energy self-sufficiency<\/h3>\n

But what does energy self-sufficiency even mean? According to Russell McKenna of University Aberdeen, there are three different levels of energy self-sufficiency (McKenna et. Al., 2014):<\/p>\n

1. Trend toward self-sufficiency<\/strong>: Decentralised, regional energy supply, i.e. there are tendencies towards a regional energy supply that covers, for example, more than 50% of the annual demand, although self-sufficiency is not (necessarily) explicitly defined as a goal.
2. Soft or on-grid self-sufficiency<\/strong>: On-grid self-sufficiency, i.e. the municipality or region is self-sufficient in terms of energy throughout the year; however, the existing supra-regional grid infrastructure (for electricity, gas, heating, etc.) is often exploited to compensate for discrepancies between supply and demand.
3. Strong, hard or complete self-sufficiency<\/strong>: Completely self-sufficient (also: off-grid) or islanding: the municipality or region is energetically disconnected from its surroundings and constantly and completely meets its own energy demand.<\/p>\n

TELE is trending towards self-sufficiency and already supplies part of its building’s air conditioning via self-produced solar energy using modules on the company building’s roof and facade. TELE is now aiming for on-grid-self-sufficiency by 2025 and would thus like to become as independent as possible from conventionally generated energy over the next few years.<\/p>\n

Four sub-areas for greater energy self-sufficiency<\/h3>\n

After the kickoff, at the end of 2020, the team members for the “Energy Self-Sufficiency 2025” program defined four sub-areas for the development of internal and external innovation:<\/p>\n
