What is IoT? Everyone talks about the Internet of Things, but rarely do two people mean the same thing. It is not enough to simply link a physical product to the Internet to be successful with IoT. Rather, we have to break out of the purely technical product development thinking and allow for creative freedom from which completely new business models can emerge.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But what does IoT even mean? In the Internet of Things, physical systems communicate with the Internet and exchange data with the cloud. Data is transformed and prepared for a specific customer benefit. Ideally, this results in linked, digital services that can offer customers great added value. The key to IoT is therefore the customer’s perspective, because only the customer knows his most urgent problem and knows what defines real added value for him. By involving the customer in the idea generation process, IoT can create completely new solutions that have never existed before. TELE has a long tradition in the development of reliable products for the acquisition of electrical values. On the way to IoT, these products are extended by a microprocessor which processes the measured data on site, immediately triggers actions and can be connected to the internet. In the future, it will also be possible to record many other relevant variables such as position, temperature or movement. This allows an almost unlimited analysis and processing of data as well as connecting to other web services. And this is where it gets exciting, because in this way a large number of digital services can be provided for the respective application. An electric motor drives a ventilation system in an office building. The IoT device measures the power consumption directly at the motor and constantly compares it with a defined threshold value. If the threshold value is exceeded, it not only triggers an alarm locally and switches off the motor. In addition, this information is also transferred to the cloud and triggers an alarm (via e-mail, SMS, …) to the operator or directly to a service technician with information about the fault in the motor. Yet, this function is by no means decisive.
However, the customer profits greatly\u00a0 when an engine overload with cost-intensive downtime can be avoided in advance. To this end, the IoT device measures and analyses values in the event of a fault and transmits them continuously. If the data is collected and intelligently evaluated, application profiles can be created in the medium term. IoT puts physical products in the background and consistently focuses on what the customer needs the most. Ideally, the customer only buys a digital service, regardless of the product, for example a dashboard, an automatic log or data in a suitable form to feed into his system.<\/p>\n

This new approach also poses a number of challenges for providers of IoT solutions.<\/p>\n

First of all, it is necessary to abandon traditional patterns of thought and processes and focus entirely on customer needs. Moving away from “What is technically possible?” to “What is the most urgent need of my customer?” This also includes, for example, the intensive study of usability and data protection.
In addition to new product requirements, IoT will also change the way we sell our products. We will no longer sell the customer a specific device that provides a function, but a service that solves different problems depending on the requirements.
