We learned about industry-specific requirements, found out what users and stakeholders want, and dealt with the question of the right business model. Now we hopefully have a clearer picture of how our idea can be implemented technically. From an agile point of view, there are of course always several possibilities. During the development process, we will therefore find out which way proves to be the right one for a satisfied customer. First of all, it&#8217;s worth taking a look at the big picture &#8211; the system architecture.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>System architecture<\/h3>\n<p>The system architecture shows us what components with what functions make up the product, how these components work together. In IoT projects, we should take a small step back from the &#8220;purely technically feasible&#8221; and think more broadly. Because in addition to technical finesse, the following factors in particular determine business success:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Technical adaptation to local conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Industry-specific requirements, e.g. standards.<\/li>\n<li>Cost<\/li>\n<li>Product benefits for the customer<\/li>\n<li>Sustainability and climate friendliness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Which components I can use in my system architecture depends not only on the location of the installation and the costs, but nowadays also heavily on component availability.<\/p>\n<p>If several locations are to be networked in one solution, for example, there is the option of using hierarchical solutions (master\/slave) in which a master module controls several distributed sensor modules. The overall system consists of the hardware, which is connected to the cloud via a data link. The collected information is displayed in a user interface, for example on a website, and can also be configured with it.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, critical response times between the modules or from the sensor to the cloud and back, as well as the amount of data generated, are important. It must be &#8220;well&#8221; checked how this so-called round trip time affects the application. A data point model helps to define what data\/information needs to be exchanged in the system.<\/p>\n<p>Because the data volumes are becoming ever larger, it makes sense to no longer transfer all the data to the cloud, but to process and store it as directly as possible &#8220;at the edge of the network&#8221; in a so-called &#8220;edge logic&#8221;, i.e. closer to the place where it is created. This is particularly important for time-critical applications.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>IT subsystems &#8211; system integration<\/h3>\n<p>An IoT system often needs to be integrated with other existing systems. In the case of energy consumption monitoring, for example, it is necessary to process data from several different PV systems and a weather station and display it in a dashboard. The integrated monitoring system itself may then in turn be part of a larger system at the customer&#8217;s site. This is usually solved via API &#8211; Application Programming Interface. By means of an API, for example, a software can be integrated into another system in a platform-independent manner. Beside &#8220;normal&#8221; API also Web-API (web services) can be used. A web service also contains an API but additionally offers a web service. Web services enable a website provider to integrate and offer different services, e.g. from external providers, via a network (i.e. intranet, Internet) in its portal. An example of a web service is the &#8220;Stripe&#8221; platform, which enables payment by credit card.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Hardware<\/h3>\n<p>The choice of hardware has a great influence on the success or failure of a project. It is important not to focus solely on the function of a hardware component. In addition to the design and industry-relevant regulations at the point of use, availability and price are also decisive criteria for or against a component. It may even make sense to select different components for the development phase than for the final product. Particularly in agile development, the development team needs the opportunity to be flexible and to play through several variants. For example, they might use a more expensive multifunctional component that is replaced by a standard component toward the end of the project. For example, a data logger in the design\/test phase needs several inputs for different external sensors in order to test different development variants. Another example is a test control cabinet that physically requires more rows for testing than the final product, which can get by with a smaller cabinet. In addition, the developer should consider criteria from Design for Excellence for later series production, such as Design for Manufacturing, Design for Assembly, Design for Procurement or Design for Testing, so that the unit costs can be kept low.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Software<\/h3>\n<p>The choice of software depends strongly on the needs of the users. Which data should be displayed\/analyzed? Which interactions should the user be able to perform? Are different access authorizations necessary? All these questions can only be answered on a case-by-case basis. In addition, the data volume and energy consumption of the solution must also be taken into account. Depending on where the solution is used, it may have to manage without an internet connection, at least temporarily.<\/p>\n<p>The design of the interface often determines whether a solution will be used by the users and whether it will be considered useful.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Network<\/h3>\n<p>The lifeline of the Internet of Things is the network connection. Whether a wired system, such as ModBus, can be used depends heavily on the industry-specific environment in which the IoT solution will be deployed. It is often necessary to resort to radio connections, such as WLan, Bluetooth or mobile radio, for example in the case of temporary facilities or a lack of infrastructure. If no internet connection is available on site, mobile radio solutions are the means of choice.<\/p>\n<p>Each technology has its own advantages and limitations. WLan and Bluetooth, for example, only bridge certain distances and create a good data throughput. LPWAN technologies such as NB-IoT, sigfox or LoRA can transmit signals over long distances with little energy consumption, but are limited in terms of data volume. For higher data throughput or lower latency (delays in transmission), technologies such as 2G, 3G, 4G or 5G technology or, more specifically, LTE Cat M1 can be used.<\/p>\n<p>No matter which one is chosen, in any case the availability (in the planned deployment location, the providers, etc.), the energy consumption and the security of the individual radio technologies as well as service and data charges should be included in the planning.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Use of the system for other applications<\/h3>\n<p>The customer&#8217;s requirement is, of course, the primary consideration in the development of Iot projects. However, other uses often emerge in the thought process that can add value and generate additional revenue. For example, a GSM module that controls power consumption in a mobile plant can also detect the GPS position and thus transmit the exact location of the plant at any time. This helps, for example, in the event of unauthorized commissioning or theft.<\/p>\n<p>Transmitted energy data makes it possible to create consumption profiles and opens up ways to save energy, for example by selectively shutting down during unused periods. Applications that record machine data show wear and tear or damage, for example, and thus enable predictive maintenance. This may allow additional target groups to be addressed and revenues to be generated.<\/p>\n<p>So IoT projects are complex. Their planning and development requires collaboration in interdisciplinary teams with diverse expertise.
